Field Evaluation: Clinching Cold-Formed Steel for Home Construction - Attexor Corporation

PATH is conducting an evaluation to identify the potential applications, cost, and labor savings associated with clinching cold-formed steel for home construction. Hawaii was chosen because it is the largest and most-concentrated market for steel framing. The PATH team is working with the Hawaii Steel Framing Alliance, two large-volume builders, and Attexor Inc., manufacturer of the clinching tool. The actual evaluations are conducted at the panel facility. Most of the framing operations for these two builders consist of components that are built in a panel facility, which is more applicable to clinching than site-built applications.

The initial field evaluations were conducted August 11-15, 2003, and the results are being analyzed for an evaluation report. The team has found at least two significant applications for clinching when the builder is panelizing parts of the building. The savings from using clinches instead of screws in these applications could pay back a significant part of the cost the builder currently pays for labor to fabricate these components. Each laborer uses about 5,000 screws per shift on these applications.

Applications being evaluated include the use of clinching for double studs used at openings and point loads, as well as stud-track sections used for connections around door and window openings.
