As hurricane season begins, PATH continues to do its part to help the residents of Gulf Coast region prepare.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and PATH sponsored the Sustainable Housing Technology Symposium, a two-day event in Biloxi, Mississippi, on Aug 1 and 2. The symposium brought together experts on building technology to share their knowledge with groups rebuilding along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Public housing authority officials, faith-based organizations, community housing groups, developers, city government officials and their consultants learned were updated on the best disaster-resistant materials and building techniques. The seminar was featured in the local Sun Herald.
PATH will also participate in Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour's Recovery Expo on August 11, 12, and 13 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi. The expo will be a comprehensive, convention-style event for the public, encompassing all aspects of recovery and renewal.
This follows another successful free hurricane preparedness and repair workshop in New Orleans on July 22 and 23. More than 1,100 residents received advice on repairing storm-damaged roofs, walls and floors; installing windows, doors and hurricane shutters; and cost-effective ways to improve their homes' energy efficiency and durability.
The workshop is part of a continuing series sponsored by PATH, the U.S. Department of Energy, The Home Depot and Entergy Corporation. To encourage homeowners to make use of skills gained at the workshops, The Home Depot issued gift cards worth between $1 and $1,000 towards any store purchases to the first 500 attendees each day. Attendees also received a free series of "How-To" technical briefs covering various aspects of home repair, and free compact fluorescent light bulbs.
A number of PATH Manufacturer Partners were on site to show homeowners how to incorporate home repair products and technologies into storm mitigation projects. Participating partners included SEISCO/Microtherm, DAP Products, Inc., James Hardie Building Products, and Simpson Strong Tie.
