HUD Selects Builder and Site for Concept Home Demonstration Project

Brighton Construction to Build Demo in Omaha, Nebraska

The Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH), a project of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, today announced the selection of Brighton Construction to build the Concept Home Demonstration Home in Omaha, Nebraska.

The PATH Concept Home is an initiative to develop high-quality, affordable homes that are easily adaptable to changing lifestyles and increasing technological advances. This "home of the future" will combine functions that make optimal use of labor, material, time, and money. Innovations include flexible floor plans that accommodate family changes, customizable designs that give the home the quality and curb appeal of a custom-built house without the high cost, and improved production methods that speed construction and enhance long-term durability.

"We are pleased to announce that Brighton Construction, an innovative homebuilder, will be joining with us to build the first Concept Home," said David Engel, director of Affordable Housing Research and Technology within HUD's Office of Research and Policy Development. "This single-family home will showcase the Concept Home's key attributes of flexibility, production efficiencies and affordability."

"I am excited that Brighton has been selected to play a vital role on this important HUD initiative to make home design more efficient and affordable," said Fernando Pages-Ruiz, president of Brighton Construction.

Brighton Construction, a Nebraska-based construction firm, builds affordable housing in Nebraska and Iowa, and also specializes in designing homes that fit the preferences of different ethnic groups. Brighton is engaged with the PATH Liberty Village Field Evaluation in Lincoln, Nebraska f eaturing ENERGY STAR rated high-efficiency two-story homes and townhouses which are being built with "green" practices to protect and preserve the surrounding natural resources.

The Concept Home will be built within an existing neighborhood in Omaha overlooking the Creighton University campus, providing affordability, infill development, and a "future-proof" home designed to grow with its owners.

The Demonstration Home is the third phase of the Concept Home program. Results from the first two phases include market research, outreach, technology scanning and the development of building plans and specifications for Concept Home designs. An advisory committee consisting of key industry experts has provided continuous feedback and direction.

"The Concept Home demonstration will show both builders and consumers where homebuilding is headed. Instead of a show home driven by a collection of new technologies, the Concept Home will showcase design and production ideas, which are then supported by innovative building systems," said James Lyons, senior engineer with Newport Partners, LLC and project manager for the PATH Concept Home Demonstration Project.
