PATH Asks Homebuilders and Homeowners "Are You Ready?"
PATH kicked off the 2005 PATH Concept Home Project today. The project will build on the first year's work by developing full specifications for homes with Concept Home technologies. PATH will work closely with those manufacturers willing to produce these systems, and the designers who can envision the needs of America's changing households.

PATH will announce a new resource for builders and homeowners at the "Breakfast of Innovators" from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14 at the PATH Tutorial Townhouses at the 2005 International Builders' Show in Orlando, Florida.

PATH Announces Opening of Demo "Home of Today"
PATH celebrated the Oct. 29 dedication and opening of the NowHouse, a fully functional demonstration home erected in the parking lot of SBC Park in San Francisco. Built by CleverHomes and cosponsored by PATH, the NowHouse is one of the most environmentally friendly and technologically advanced homes ever constructed and available for purchase by the public.

PATH's Industry Committee met October 28, in Annapolis, Maryland, to discuss the goals of PATH and the role of the committee. The Industry Committee was created to provide a stakeholder perspective to PATH activities. It includes industry pioneers and experts who have made their mark in the home building industry.

PATH Asks: Do Preferences in Homebuilding Industry Impact Acceptance of Innovations?
Professionals representing various sectors of the homebuilding industry concluded a two-day meeting today with a wide range of recommendations to PATH on how to overcome barriers to innovation by market sector. Participants represented the views of their respective professions, including builders, manufacturers, appraisers, trade associations, architects, and academic researchers.

PATH Studies Advanced Panelized Construction
To further the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Advanced Panelized Construction Technology Roadmap, PATH has initiated a research project to achieve a greater understanding of panelized construction and develop Performance Standard Criteria for panel connections to encourage widespread use of this building technology.

PATH Explores Slab-on-Grade Modular Housing
PATH will study the technical options for installing modular housing on slab-on-grade foundation systems and examine the alternatives in terms of technical viability, cost and market acceptance. The research will allow modular housing to find new markets by expanding the benefits and spurring new technology to allow slab-on-grade construction.

Homebuilding Industry Examines Risks Involved in Technology Innovation
During this two-day roundtable industry participants considered the definition of "risk" as a barrier to innovation, examined case studies of innovative products and recommended potential steps for a roadmap to address risk barriers. PATH sponsored the roundtable, the first of three, to address barrier removal strategies -- a key component of the program's mission.

MHRA, HUD Take Lean Building to the Factory
The Manufactured Housing Research Alliance and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development have announced a new initiative to study ways to "reinvent" manufacturing processes using lean-building techniques that could help improve plant operations, energy efficiency, and structural engineering.

Industry Representatives Explore Risk as a Barrier to Innovation
Representatives from the homebuilding industry convened in Washington, DC, today to consider issues related to risk as a barrier to technology innovation. The group's purpose is to develop a roadmap for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's PATH program with recommendations for HUD actions to reduce barriers to adoption of new technology.

HUD, EPA Fund Certification Program for Remodelers
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and have awarded a contract to the Building Perfomance Institute to continue work on the PATH's Roadmap for Energy Efficiency in Existing Homes.

PATH is pleased to announce David Engel was inducted into the America's Best Remodeling Hall of Fame Friday at the National Association of Home Builders Remodelors Council Gala. The Hall of Fame was established to honor individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to the remodeling industry.

PATH Launches Roadmapping Effort for Residential Roofs
PATH recently awarded a contract to Newport Partners LLC to develop a technology roadmap for roofs and surrounding systems on new and existing homes. PATH uses roadmapping -- a process whereby parties most affected by an issue work together to address common interests -- to help identify and prioritize R&D and related activities.

The study involves a survey of current and soon-to-be homeowners from different regions and different backgrounds to see whether attitudes and perceptions are changing, and to help determine whether these technologies have a chance in today's marketplace.

Some of the most widespread and destructive problems in housing today result from moisture intrusion or improper water vapor management. Recognizing the need to provide guidance on this issue, PATH has awarded a contract to develop a guidebook of regional best practices for moisture control, targeted to homebuilders.

HUD and Building Industry Showcase New Homes That Can Resist Hurricanes
One week before Hurricane Charley, three homeless families moved into new homes in Port Charlotte, Florida. Thanks to PATH technologies, those three homes are intact and suffered only some minor roof damage while other homes in the neighborhood were seriously damaged.

PATH's recently released report, "The Diffusion of Innovation in the Residential Building Industry," looks at how and why innovations spread within the residential design and construction industry.The presence of "technology advocates" within a company is an important indicator in the diffusion of residential building technologies, the report says.

HUD’s Energy Efficient Rehab Advisor Helps Improve Home Energy Efficiency
Recognizing the enormous potential for energy savings and comfort improvements, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently launched the Energy Efficient Rehab Advisor, a Web-based tool designed to help homeowners, contractors, architects, facility managers and others to improve energy efficiency in existing homes during renovation and remodeling.

HUD Set to Announce the Top 10 Technologies at PATH’s “Breakfast of Innovators”
General Deputy Assistant Secretary Darlene F. Williams of HUD's Office of Policy Development and Research-which administers PATH-will announce the "Top 10 Technologies" at PATH's "Breakfast of Innovators" on Wednesday, Jan. 21 from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. To be held at the NextGen Demonstration Home in the parking lot of the Las Vegas Convention Center during the 2004 International Builders Show, the PATH breakfast event will introduce visitors to these proven technologies on the edge of industry acceptance that promise to raise the standard for residential building practices.
