PATH Joins Partners to Revitalize South Chicago
The Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing is proud to join Claretian Associates in providing affordable housing to low-income families by revitalizing South Chicago. Complete with a total makeover, an open house will take place at the New Homes for South Chicago III Development on November 14. PATH helped to ensure that the new South Chicago homes would be among the most energy-and resource efficient in Illinois.
With PATH recommendations, the homes will be built with recycled building materials. These materials include: cast-in-place concrete foundations; structural insulated panels with a wall R-value of 24.7 and a roof value of 42.5; double pane, low-e windows; 92.5 percent efficient sealed-combustion gas furnaces; and energy efficient lighting. Consistent with PATH's vision of reducing energy use and environmental impact, the homes will reduce the overall energy needs by at least 50 percent compared to similar housing built by conventional standards.
The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity will provide funding for many of the resource-and energy efficient building products so they can be offered to buyers at low or no cost.
The development for low-income families consists of single-family homes, which may be as large as 1,700 square feet, built with full basements; two-flats with 2,868 square feet; owner's units with 1,900 square feet; and rental units with 968 square feet.
