Field Evaluation: Hughes Construction

Project Summary

The buildings are complete at the Lexington, NC site of Hughes Construction. This project presented an opportunity for a side-by-side field evaluation of several building technologies. Four duplex buildings sited for similar sun orientation were erected on crawlspace foundations. Each building employed a different structural material. Arxx's (formerly Blue Maxx) insulating concrete forms (ICF), Babb's autoclaved aerated concrete blocks (AAC), composite panels fabricated with steel channel and expanded polystyrene foam, and standard 2x4 wood-framed walls provide the structural perimeters. Labor and material costs and methods have been captured for each assembly.

Research Center staff are analyzing results of the energy monitoring. Sensors and monitoring equipment were installed to provide data on energy consumption, including time of day use, stratification, and equipment cycle times. All units were monitored, while unoccupied, for the winter months. Selected units were monitored, while occupied, for a cooling season.
