Building Performance Institute to study energy efficiency in existing homes
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded a grant to the Building Performance Institute (BPI) to continue work on the Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing's (PATH) Roadmap for Energy Efficiency in Existing Homes.
One of five PATH roadmaps, the existing homes roadmap identifies a wide range of emerging technologies that with further research and development could generate substantial energy savings in existing homes. The roadmap will also seek improvements in market delivery of these products by working with remodelers and other segments of the home building industry.
Under the grant, which was co-funded by the EPA, Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Energy through an interagency agreement, BPI will expand procedures for certifying and accrediting remodelers in the energy retrofit market, including providing certification procedures for EPA-supported Home Performance with Energy Star® programs in some states. Furthermore, the contract will expand BPI's efforts in technician certification in whole-house diagnostics, heating and cooling systems, and building envelope improvement. BPI work will include a quality assurance component to ensure best practices are applied in the field.
