RoofsTitle - Arrow

A roof adds to the character of a house while it shelters the people inside from the forces of nature. A roof will not last forever, but a well-built and properly maintained roof has a substantial capacity to be energy efficient and to withstand natural disasters as well as the everyday elements.

Whether for a traditional or manufactured home, remodeled or new, PATH has invested extensive resources in roofing systems research. Perhaps PATH's greatest contribution is the PATH-NIST Durability Project, which develops quantifiable measurements of performance for many materials, including those used in roofing systems. The PATH Technology Inventory and ToolBase Internet portal provide resources homebuilders and owners can use to make educated decisions about roofing.

PATH Tools

NEST: National Economic Service-life Tools
NEST is a set of tools and resources designed to help homeowners choose the right amount of durability for their homes. By examining factors such as the structure, location, materials, and age of a house, NEST can find the durable materials that will help to maintain a home at the lowest cost.

The Rehab Guide Volume 3: Roofs March 1999
The Rehab Guides are a series of nine guidebooks that inform the design and construction industry of state-of-the-art materials and innovative practices in housing rehabilitation. Volume 3 covers the major roofing systems, as well as protective strategies, energy and air filtration issues, roofing materials, and gutters and downspouts.

Roof Framing Connections in Conventional Residential Construction February 2002
This project focused on connections used with conventional light-frame wood roof construction. A literature review was conducted and supplemented with new research on the performance of conventional roof systems and components including ceiling joist-to-rafter connections and roof framing-to-wall connections.

Technology Inventory Spotlight

Grid Marked Sheathing
Includes pre-printed gridlines to facilitate measuring, marking, cutting, and nailing. This can trim installation time, especially for complex roofs.

Fiber Cement Shingles
Fibrous concrete reinforcement added to concrete tile improves the strength and reduces the weight of concrete tiles.

Photovoltaic Roofing
Photovoltaic (PV) modules, which convert sunlight into electricity, are integrated into roofing materials.

Radiant Barriers
Reflect radiant heat back towards its source, reflecting as much as 97% and reducing heat gain in homes.

Wide Span Metal Roofing
Labor-intensivity of metal roofing products has been eliminated with new cold-rolled steel roofing products.
