National Pilot: Playa Vista
Playa Vista is located on
1,087 acres, formerly the Hughes Aircraft plant site, in West Los Angeles.
The development of Playa Vista focuses on sustainability and environmental
sensitivity, including the restoration of the Ballona Wetlands to about 340
acres and preservation of about one-half of the property as open space.
Performance guidelines for the project target energy reduction of 30%
relative to the California Energy Code. As a result, Playa Vista has been certified as an Energy Star Development. For the approximately 13,000 residences which will be built at Playa Vista, the focus is on energy efficiency, improved indoor air quality, waste minimization, enhanced livability, and consumer savings. The community will be served by a transportation system including advanced technologies for convenient, energy efficient mass transit. This urban community will include a 3.2 million square foot Campus for entertainment, media and technology district, which will house the new movie studio space along with retail and other commercial space and approximately 750 hotel rooms. Playa Vista will be a model community dedicated to sustainable development, energy efficiency, and utilization of advanced technology to support these community goals.
