La Plata, Maryland

triangle Demonstration Site: Washington Square
Washington Square in La Plata, Maryland is an owner-occupied development of 80 units designed by Bruce Davis Construction Inc. to meet the requirements of senior citizens who are independent and active, and wish to live in a comfortable, secure and maintenance free home. One of the primary features of a Washington Square home is the insulated concrete form (ICF) wall construction. This particular technology enhances durability of exterior walls, while lowering overall energy costs within the home. There are also several other PATH technologies included in Washington Square homes. For example, a tankless water heater allows the owner to experience unlimited hot water use throughout the entire home. Another PATH technology used is fiber-cement siding. This particular siding is aesthetically pleasing, while at the same time providing enhanced durability. Construction on the model homes in a duplex arrangement began on May 3, 1999. Since then, two additional duplexes and one fourplex have been completed. In addition to being a PATH Field Evaluation and Demonstration project, one of the model homes is the Nation's Capital Concrete Showcase Home, sponsored by the Northeast Concrete Shippers Association and the Portland Cement Association. The entire community is enrolled in the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative's EnergyStar Program. ENERGY STAR program.
