Demonstration Site
The first phase of the Lofts at New Center--the PATH demonstration project in Detroit, Michigan-- is presently under design development with construction documents anticipated later this summer. SWA has received tentative agreement from a manufacturer of fuel cells (a subdivision of the local utility, DTE Energy Technologies) to install a demonstration unit to serve a limited number of the 164 dwelling units for the purpose of evaluation. Fuel cells join hydrogen with oxygen atoms, creating water. In the process they give up electrons and generate electricity. Any hydrogen-rich fuel source, such as natural gas, can be used, resulting in a third to a half of the carbon and virtually no sulfur or nitrogen emissions typical of combustion methods. This high efficiency equipment also assures greater reliability and eliminates transmission losses.
