Independent of the Valparaiso report,
there was a Canadian equivalent study
that concluded that wood is better
than steel in at least 3 arenas:
Energy consumption, environmentally
friendly, and construction costs per
strength equivalents. In tornado
areas, hurricane straps do little to
protect. Eliminate the top plates so
that you can fasten roof trusses with
wall studs using truss plates instead
of nails. Roof lift off resistance
strength will be 20 times as strong.
Alignment of roof trusses with wall
studs will leave them with 2' centers.
this is positive if you apply the
structural sheathing on the inside
rather outside of the studs. You will
discover the ability to start inner
walls anywhere rather than specially
studded starter places. Applying the
gypsum board and the structural
sheathing in the same place puts the
two tight membrane materials together,
thus reducing mold and rot commonly
seen between the separated & moisture
entombing materials. With rigidized
cellulose insulation, fire draft
blocks are not necessary.
