Every area of the U.S. has it's own
unique list of durability issues. Dry
climates need vapor bariers under the
gypsum board, while blowing rain or snow
areas need large roof overhang (eaves)+
vapor barier outboard of the studded
exterior walls (under the finish
siding). Vapor bariers should not entomb
moisture within the wall cavities, The
Formosan termite has invaded the
Louisiana area. There is no telling how
wide the problem may spread. This was
reported at the "PATH" Durability
conference last November. They eat wood
at a rate 30 times the domestic
termites. Ask your local building
inspector for the name of a local
"moisture engineer for housing". Also
ask for local rot/ fungus/ termite
reports for your area. Durability issues
addressed for one part of the country
may be the opposite in another part.
