Owners of costal dwellings built upon
pilings have a tendency to close in the
foundation pilings for storage space
under the home. When high sea storms
happen, the enclosure panels need to be
specially designed to break away from
the house so that the house itself has
minimized damage. This was addressed in
the October 1999 issue of "Forest
Products Journal" The research was
reported by S.C.Yeh,
B.Kasal, C.C.Tung, and Spencer M. Rogers
Jr.

The method they describe is similar to
gable end designed shear panels designed
to release house pressure during the
sudden vacuum of a tornado. Again, the
planned stress load failure is a better
option than total house loss. A new
