About 15 years ago, Popular Science magazine had an
article on a crawlspace + plenum for a downdraft
furnace. The foundation walls were well insulated and
the soil was sealed against radon gas with a concrete
slab over polyethyline. The benefits were ducting
savings and a warm floor
If an updraft furnace were used with vents at the
ceiling joint with the central plenum, the closed
crawlspace could be a cold air return plenum.
The venting requirement to prevent moisture
accumulation and rot is satisfied by either approach.
