Deep foundations are assuming that the footing soil may
be saturated during a winter freeze. This will lift
portions of a building due to water expansion from the
freeze. An uneven lift will crack house elements,
footings, walls, etc.
Architect Frank Lloyd Wright Junior patented a gravel
only footing where the gravel is constantly drained to
prevent water presence for a potiential freeze. Extra
re-bar is required in the shallow poured concrete wall
on top of a set of "ball bearings" that are always dry.
