SUBJECT: RE: Backfill- Compaction vs natural settlement

I used the unpaved dirt of my garage and driveway for 8
years before I had the funds to pour concrete. Two
years later, my garage floor had several cracks and
hollow sounding areas when I tapped on it with a
hammer.
Since then, I've learned that graded road base soil
compacts more completely than clay, and that it will
support concrete or asphalt pavements more evenly.

I've also learned that a 5.5 bag mix will resist frost
dammage much more than the 5 bag mix required by code.

Even an experienced contractor might persuede you that
wire mesh reinforcement is not necessary. Listen to an
engineer, not a contractor in this matter.
