Don't make the mistake of putting in anything less than
Category 5 cable! You never know what applications
you're going to want to have, and this wire has been
rated for data transfers of up to 100 Mbps. Someday,
you're probably going to want to network computers in
your home, and you'll want this high-bandwidth
capability (especially when cable modems and ADSL
become more available.
Also, make sure you have the wire installed in a "star
topology" (home run panel), where each cable is run
back to a panel and not "daisy chained" or "looped"
from one outlet to another. You know how Christmas tree
lights get (one goes out...they all go out!), so avoid
this by ensuring that you're following TIA specs (with
the star topology).
