SUBJECT: Ball bearing footings?

Years ago I read where the son of Frank Lloyd Wright
demonstrated a gravel only footing for housing. The
steel that would have been placed in the footing was
placed in the bottom of the foundation wall concrete.
The result was considered positive because the
gravel was able to perform as ball bearings to allow
settling and shifting without cracking the concrete.
This is especially valuable when building over
earthquake fault zones or where fill dirt was used to
lift the elevation.
I often hear in the news where wall cracking has
ruined the value of homes. Frank Jr's practice should
be more wide spread, especially since a lower cost can
be passed on to the consumer without quality sacrifice.
