Dear Jim,
The only advantage to using the beam would be you
would have complete flexibility on where you want your
interior (non-bearing) walls in the basement.
Unless there was indeed some reason (structurally)
that your GC deviated from the plans, call him on it.
This is a design change. It is YOUR home..... You
want the home built to the plans that you approved,
don't you? Ask him why..... I bet he'll tell you
that the lead time on the beam was 2 to 3 weeks out.
If this is the case, then it was poor planning on your
GC's part.
