Mr. Blair: We use SIPS for walls and roofs (see the
"Best Practices" section here on PathNet under
"Hillside Oaks Subdivision"). Using SIPS for roofs in
our price range ("affordable" read "starter homes")
gives us vaulted ceilings in all rooms, which goes a
long way towards making a small house seem larger.
(trust me.. its a great sales feature for comparison
shoppers) We "build" a small attic space to house the
Geothermal HVAC and ductwork; and tout it as
"conditioned attic storage space" because it stays at
the same temp as the rest of the house (NO heat
penetrates the 6" roof SIPS). Also, becuase the
Geothermal HVAC unit is running in conditioned space,
the life expectancy is extended - another sales
feature. Yes, SIPS roofs cost more, but the decking
is alredy on the roof when it goes up; and the above
cited reasons have helped us earn the EPA "Energy
Star" rating for all of the houses we build, which is
a big sales feature. All things considered, we view
a total "SIPS" shell house (we conventionally frame
the interior walls and the garage) as superior to a
hybrid.
Call or write if I can be of any assistance..
