We have standard corner bead in our 1979 ranch home
and we would like to convert it to bullnose corners.
Do we have to remove the old corners or can we install
the bullnose right over the existing corner bead? Will
appreciate all ideas!

Dear Marty,
The old corner bead occupies space thar needs to be cut
slightly short of the old beaded corner. Therefore the
old bead must be removed. Use a stanly knife to cut
to the paper about 1/2" outboard of the metal. Use the
same cutter to remove lumps that interfere with a close
fit of the new corner.
A neater job can be done with a hand held router
with a vacuum dust collecter, 1/2" to 3/4" wide flat
depth cutter, and edge fence. I suggest you take
several slight passes to approach, but not penetrate
the sheetrock paper surface next to the metal. The
second and following corners you replace will be much
easier. If you are not familiar with the finishing
process, get someone with experience to do this.
