I am looking into purchasing a fireplace system made of
a volcanic product. It is lighter weight than
masonry, but seems to have many advantages. Have any
of you used this sytem? Were there problems? Would
you use it again?

Volcanic stone is a rock material with a foam texture. It can be used in the mortar as well making the structure even lighter. The smoke stains near a fireplace will be much harder to clean if the texture of the surface is foam-like. Cultured stone surfaces with volcanic product backing will be your best bet.
